Presents for the schools of our "Traveling Notebook"

Our traveling notebook is on its way to Nerys's home school in Australia. Then, it'll travel back to Galicia, to EEI Vilariño and EEI Fernández Varela in Pobra.

Despois, volverá a Galicia, á EEI Vilariño e á EEI Fernández Varela na Pobra.

Apart from writing about ourselves, our school, where we live, our celebrations and much more, we wanted to give the readers of the notebook some presents made by ourselves.

In Pazo, we made three Daniel pins with felt (one for each school).

In Quintáns, we made three Elmer's heart pins.

En Quintáns, fixemos tres broches do corazón de Elmer.

Magosto baskets

Last 13th November, C.R.A. de Rianxo celebrated MAGOSTO in Rañó. The previous weeks, we were busy making our identificative coloured chestnuts for the games and our baskets to keep the baked chestnuts.

For the baskets we found inspiration in Art.

Para as cestas buscamos inspiración na arte.

In Capela we recreated an Autumn Goddess blowing tree leaves.

En Capela recreamos unha deusa do outono soprando follas de árbore.

In Pazo we coloured Klimt's Tree of Life.

Samhain and Halloween crafts

These are some of the crafts we made at school to celebrate Samhain and Halloween:

In Pazo, we made foam pumpkins. First we cut orange foam stripes. Then we cut a green foam leaf. Finally we stapled them together and hanged them in the windows.

En Pazo fixemos cabazas de goma eva. Primeiro cortamos tiras de goma eva laranxa. Despois recortamos unha folla de goma eva verde. Finalmente grampamos todo xunto e colgámolas nas ventás.

In Capela, we made glass Jack-o-Lanterns. We painted empty glass jars of different colours. Then we drew scary faces (eyes, nose and mouth) with a black permanent marker. Eventually we added a "Happy Halloween" label and put a candle in it.

En Capela fixemos cabazas de vidro. Pintamos tarros de vidro baleiros de diferentes cores. Despois debuxamos caras arrepiantes (ollos, nariz e boca) cun rotulador permanente negro. Por último, engadímoslles unha etiqueta coa lenda "Happy Halloween" e puxemos unha candea dentro.

In Quintáns we made Magic and Scary Ghosts! We drew in a paper some ghosts and other creatures with white soft waxes . After, we used brushes to reveal the secret. We only had to use some water and a touch of black paint.

Materials and colour mixtures reminders

After the summer holidays, we started a new school year of Arts & Crafts in Capela, Pazo and also in our recently incorporated Quintáns. Apart from them, new pupils arrived to Primary 1st. So, welcome all!

If last year, we travelled around the world making crafts of the different continents, this year we will focus more specifically on ART and ARTISTS.

So as to begin, we created a poster of some materials used in art which we are going to work with throughout the year.

And we reviewed and experimented with colours: primary vs. secondary, warm vs. cool...

E revisamos e experimentamos con cores: primarias vs. secundarias, cálidas vs. frías...

Dreamcatchers from North America

For our last craft this year, we had to travel to the American continent. We were going to make a dreamcatcher like the ones used by the Ojibwe indians to protect children from nightmares. Hung above the bed, only good dreams are allowed to pass through and slide down the feathers to the sleeper, while bad dreams or nightmares stay in the net.

These are the materials we used:

- a stick of wood

- wool

- clay and paint for the balls or beads

- feathers

- plumas

First, we molded five small balls or beads with the clay and made a hole through them. Once dried, we painted them different colours.

Then, we rolled wool around the circular stick the teacher had previously prepared. It was hard!

After that, we made the interior net with more wool and with the balls in it.

Finally, we hung three feathers.

Despois, enrollamos lá arredor do paíño circular que a profesora preparara previamente. Foi difícil!

Despois diso, fixemos a rede interior con máis lá e coas bolas na mesma.

Finalmente, pendurámoslle tres plumas.

Russian Nesting Dolls (matrioskas)

Toys can be made of different materials: plastic, metal, paper, wood... We travelled to Russia to see their typical nesting dolls made of wood and we wanted to make our own using recycled paper glasses.

We made three sizes: BIG - MEDIUM - SMALL

Then, we made a tiny doll out of a metal can ring.

Colourful Candles for Family Day

Last friday, 15th May, apart from celebrating our Letras Galegas, was Family Day. In Capela we wanted to say thank you to our families with a present: a candle made out of wax and old crayons. First we chose the colours for our candle. Then we melted the wax and the crayons using the microwave, stirred the mixture well and poured three layers in a small glass. We put a wick and left them dry.

Despois derretemos a cera e as cores usando o microondas, removemos ben a mestura e vertemos tres capas nun vaso pequeno. Puxemos unha mecha e deixamos secar.

The Solar System

In Pazo we created this spectacular solar system with the sun and all its planets. After that, we hang it from the ceiling. Can you remember the name of all the planets?

Despois colgámolo do teito. Lembrades o nome de tódolos planetas?

Origami and kirigami from Japan

This week, we've been experimenting with paper folding and cutting. We've made use of two traditional Japanese tecniques: origami and kirigami to create an Easter Bunny and a shamrock for the celebration of Saint Patrick's day in Ireland some days ago.

Origami is the Japanese art of paper folding. The word Origami originates from the Japanese words ori for folding and kami for paper. The technique is based on a square piece of paper that is folded into a sculpture. Origami traditionally does not use scissors to cut the paper or any glue.

O origami é a arte xaponesa de dobrar papel. A palabra Origami procede das palabras xaponesas ori (dobrar) e kami (papel) .

Kirigami is a variation of origami that includes cutting of the paper (from Japanese "kiru" = to cut) rather than solely folding the paper as is the case with origami.

Mexican masks for the Day of the Dead

Day of the Dead is a Mexican holiday that takes place October 31st, November 1st and November 2nd, when we celebrate our Samhain. A typical symbol of this holiday is the skull represented in masks and food. We created our own skull mask out of a cardboard plate.
