French for Families project: Fife, June 2017

In Scottish primary schools there has been a long-standing programme to offer pupils the chance to start to learn a second language: this has usually been French, although Italian, German, Spanish and Gaelic have also been offered. Mainly delivered through non-specialist staff, this has had some success, but a number of attempts have been and are being made to improve the quality of learning which takes place.

One initiative took place in Fife last year, which involved schools, support staff, pupils and their parents in collaborating in the learning process. This was intended to increase the pupils’  attainment, but also crucially to make parents and the wider community partners in the young peoples’ learning.

The videos which form part of the evaluation of the project reflect pupils’, parents’, managers’ and teachers’ views of the success or otherwise of the project.
